Problem

While playing around with the Azure Licenses blade inside Azure Active Directory I was wondering why on earth I am not able to assing licenses to groups. Every time I clicked on Licensed groups and then on + Assign I only saw a list of users, without being able to select any groups.

It turned out that this feature is not supported with the Azure Free subscription. Okay fine, but I have already activated a free trial of Azure Active Directory Premium P2. So why am I still not able to assign to groups?

To solve this, I first had to assign my logged in user the necessary Azure Active Directory Premium P2 license manually via Licensed users => + Assign. Afterwards I was able to add a group...

Makes sense now if I think about it! 😀
